Fifteen members of An Garda Síochána were awarded medals for their singular acts of bravery occasioned on December 16, 1983 and December 20, 1983. This resulted from the kidnapping of businessman Don Tidey by a Provisional IRA murder gang. R/Garda Gary Sheehan and Private Patrick Kelly were shot in cold blood. No one has been convicted of their killing. I was proud and humbled to be present for this ceremony with my colleagues from the GSRMA (Garda Retired). History casts long shadows and asks important questions.
